Meet Hugo Simmonds and Cain Durman, both apprentices currently completing their Apprenticeships here at WAE. We speak to them to find out what made them decide to take up an apprenticeship over further education, and what they hope to achieve over the next 18 months…
Why did you decide on an apprenticeship over university?
Hugo: Apprenticeships gives you the chance to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge whilst working and learning transferable skills. They are an excellent way to gain access to a company or a sector you want to work in, and if you do a good job, becoming a valued member of the team, it will put you in a strong position for when there are permanent job opportunities.
Why did you choose WAE?
Cain: WAE has always had a reputation locally for being a brilliant company. To even get the chance to apply for an apprenticeship here was an achievement to me. I am always in awe of the variety of work WAE does across all sectors and I feel very fortunate to be a part of it.
What are you hoping to get out of your apprenticeship?
Hugo: A wide range of skills within a technical, engineering environment whilst at the same time building on my own attributes. Being able to work in an industrial environment as an apprenticeship is great as I am meeting people with industry knowledge and learning from them. I hope to acquire new skills from my employers, to become an asset and grow with the company.
Where do you see yourself in 18 months’ time?
Cain: In 18 months’ time, I would like to see myself fully immersed in my role here WAE, with a lot more knowledge under my belt to help me work more independently and hopefully progress within the business.
What is the one word you would use to describe working at WAE?
Hugo: “Innovative”
Cain: “Engaging”
