WILLIAMS COLLABORATES WITH AB DYNAMICS TO BRING SIMULATION EXPERTISE TO AUTOMOTIVE OEMS

Apr 7, 2016

WAE has signed a new agreement with specialist test equipment designer and manufacturer, AB Dynamics, that will see Williams use its Formula One honed expertise in simulation to help AB Dynamics create new Driver-in-the-Loop simulation (DIL) technology.

Vehicle Dynamics Simulation (VDS) is the newest emerging form of simulation, typically measuring vehicle and driver performance rather than monitoring driver behaviours. Designed to simulate actual driving conditions of real vehicles they are ideal for vehicle manufacturers’ engineering and product development teams. It is believed that as much as 30% of costs incurred during vehicle development could be saved by using a DIL simulator with subjective feedback.

The AB Dynamics’ VDS product will use WAE’s Motion Platform which employs linear actuators delivering up to 60Hz frequency response and a more tightly integrated Driver-in-the-Loop system. This Motion Platform, combined with AB Dynamics’ ability to design, build and manufacture large specialised test equipment together with its real-time and human interface software design, means Automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers can be assured of a truly advanced, reliable and easy to use simulator.

Since 2001, Williams has pioneered state-of-the-art immersive software, hardware, and driver- in-the-loop vehicle simulation technologies to train our racing drivers and as a powerful engineering tool for improving the performance of our Formula One cars. WAE is now able to use this know-how and technology to create bespoke hardware and software simulation solutions for clients.
