FWT first invested into Open Bionics Limited in January 2019, who are building and developing the next generation of bionic limbs. This was the Funds’ ninth investment and has invested a total of £1.83 million into the company to date.
An award-winning designer, manufacturer and supplier of bionic limbs, Bristol based Open Bionics has ambitions to become a market leader in a range of bespoke prostheses and assistive technologies and a global supplier of prosthetic and orthotic products and services.
The Company’s first commercial product, its Hero Arm, uses 3D printing and simplified mechanical systems which has reduced costs to open attractive new markets for bionic functionality. Combining this competitive pricing with commercial licences from Disney, Marvel and Pixar, positions the Hero Arm most favourably with children and adolescents, changing their perceived disability into superhero status. They recently received Medicare approval and become the first printed bionic arm to receive PDAC approval, which makes it possible for patients to use healthcare insurance to access the technology, helping it to reach a wider audience.
